Let There Be Light

April 12, 2011

Some time ago I installed walkway/garden lights for my mom and dad. They love them. Recently it appeared that half of the lights were no longer working. Last night I stopped by and my Dad gave me a handful of bulbs. I fixed 4 out of 5 dark lights simply by changing the burned out bulbs. One light needed to be replaced completely. Years ago I bought some lights hoping to put some in my yard. Long story short, it never happened. They’ve been in my attic for at least 10 years. I have given the lights to my parents. (I will be installing them if it ever stops raining) The new lights are metal, and 18 – 20 watts as compared to the plastic 4watt lights they have now. I also will be installing rock lights.

I love You

April 1, 2011

He loved her, he loved her very much. But she was young, just 17. He was young, but experienced. He chose today, April 1st, to say “I love you” just in case. If things didn’t  work out, he could always just say “April Fools”.  It did work out. It was 55 years ago today my dad told my mom he loved her. October will be 54 years of marriage.

RIP Mack

February 23, 2011

He was so cute, and a little goofy. I remember the night Ray brought him home. Angel had protested right up till the end, but finally, he gave in. “Go get your dog”. Once home he seemed to belong there. He chased leaves in the wind and tripped all over himself! He was a huge puppy. They named him Mack.

Mack had an under bite that sometimes made him look like he was showing his teeth. He grew to 160lbs and would shake his head throwing slobber everywhere just like Hooch. But he was the most loving, kind, and gentle dog you’d ever meet. All Mack wanted was love, and he got plenty of it from the Maldonado family as well as everyone who ever had the pleasure of meeting the gentle giant.

Rest in peace dear Mack, you touched my heart and will be missed.

Mom’s TV

February 15, 2011

Mom has always had an under counter radio. When it stopped working, Dad decided to get her a new and improved “Radio”. The new one is actually a TV, DVD, radio from Coby, bought on Amazon. Very nice Valentines Gift. I helped install it, and Mom is very happy to be able to cook and watch her shows.

Pipe Club

February 9, 2011

Last year I started, occasionally,  to smoke a pipe. I bought a beautiful pipe, some tobacco, a packing tool, a pipe lighter, and pipe cleaners. It’s a relaxing hobby, even if it’s not a very healthy hobby. At my New Years Vacation I was able to smoke with my brothers and it was an awesome time.

Very Neighborly

February 7, 2011

During the last snow/ice storm you could see downed trees, almost anywhere you went. My parents had a branch come down and smash through their roof, into their living room. They also had a tree come down in their back yard. Their insurance company sent a company out to remove the branch and patch the roof. I went over today to help my dad try to clean up the damage in the back yard.

My dad has every tool ever made including a Craftsman chainsaw. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get it started at all last year. So we started the day with a pole saw and a hand saw. Yep, for a 40 foot mulberry tree. Well, as we began the arduous task, Rigoberto “Ricky” my dads neighbor from down below offered us the use of his chainsaw. My dad is old school, and didn’t want to borrow something that could break and have to be replaced. But me? I’m from the school that says “hell yeah brother!” I’m pretty sure it was my pop who used to say “never look a gift horse in the mouth” . It would have taken us days just to cut the small branches and forget sawing through the trunk of the tree. So Ricky saved us a lot of work.

My point here is this, in this world of ME, ME, ME, there are people like Rigoberto who surprise you and and are generous with word and deed. Thank you Rigoberto. Your simple neighborly act has inspired me to be more neighborly myself.

My dad gave him the Craftsman chainsaw saying, “If you can get it running, it’s all yours”. In case you are wondering, Ricky refused money. He said he was just being neighborly.

#261 in Life’s Little Instruction Book says:

Take family vacations whether you can afford them or not. The memories will be priceless.

I’ve got a head full of priceless memories, and a few pictures.

Happy Birthday Mom

January 23, 2011

I’m so lucky to have both my Mom and my Dad. Many of my friends do not. I am also lucky to have a great relationship with them both. They’re both good people who I, even if I weren’t family, would want to know. So, happy Birthday to you mom! I hope you have many more.

Your number one son!
