Just on the cusp of the food court at the mall you can find the entrance to sugar high heaven, better known as Candy World. Just like Disney world is better than Disney Land, I have to assume Candy World is better than Candy Land. I had seen small candy stores before, but this was…monumental. A whole world all about candy. I was overwhelmed. My eyes didn’t know where to look first. All the candy I’ve ever enjoyed throughout my life and then some. Was this…nirvana? (Screaming kid screams behind me) Nope. Not nirvana. But Amazing none the less. When I was a kid (flashback to me as a kid) My Grandmother used to take me and my brother to the mall. There was a tiny candy shop where she used to buy us these soft sugary slices of candy.

What a great memory.

Guess what I found at Candy World?

February 22, 2012

I’ve been asked what the picture is on my header. It’s a snowflake. One of my nieces saw it on her glove and asked me to photograph it.

I had lunch with some friends at a really tasty Mexican restaurant, Rosa Mexicano. Great food, service, and experience. My friends were raving about the fresh guacamole and asked if I wanted some. I said no because…well… I’ve always said no. Guacamole has never “looked” right to me. I know some of you are thinking “Are you kidding/crazy/weird/serious/king of the carnivores?” I am serious, and I am a carnivore, but here’s the thing, 9 times out of 10 I’m right. If it doesn’t look right to me, it usually doesn’t taste right to me. Deviled eggs? Look nasty to me. Taste nasty to me. Egg salad? Uggg…(I love eggs any way except these two)

I’m not a kid, so when I say I don’t care for something, the implication is I’ve tried it and didn’t find it to my liking. But the reality this time was I had never tried guacamole before. I was thinking about this as the guacamole maker rolled a cart out to our table and began an elegant process of making fresh guacamole. I watched cilantro, chives/onions, jalapenos, oil, and salt go into a pestle. Followed by an avocado and then another round of cilantro, chives/onions, jalapenos, and salt. Last into the mix were the chopped tomatoes.

Truthfully? It just looked like a mess. But I love cilantro, and onions, and tomatoes, and jalapeno don’t bother me. So, the only unknown was the avocado. Sigh. I quickly picked up a chip, scooped up some of the truly disgusting green goop, popped it in my mouth and…

Wow! That’s not bad…I scooped again. I had to make sure it wasn’t a fluke…Yum!  My friends suggested we order another…I’m in!

Last Shuttle Flight

August 9, 2011

I was a kid when the Shuttle program started. I actually got to see one of them on the back of the special 747  they used to transport the Shuttles from where they landed back to where they launched. I was glued to my TV when the Challenger exploded, and I also watched the spectacular destruction of Columbia. Terrible tragedies.

Between April 12 1981 and July 8th 2011 there were 135 shuttle launches.

It’s very sad. The end of an era. I can now cross something off my bucket list…never did get to see a Shuttle launch (in person). Weird that the same week the Shuttle Atlantis was on its last mission I saw this in a client’s back yard. I had to take a picture of it.

I didn’t know it until today, but yesterday was a milestone. Yesterday I wrote my 100th post. Had I realized that I had reached 100 posts, I probably wouldn’t have written about sweatin’ like a pig. I might have written about my favorite post, or the most read post. I could have tried to wow you with a witty meaningful post or something. Oh well, past is past.

I just re-read all 100 posts. Here are a few I enjoyed reading again.

Let There Be Light

April 12, 2011

Some time ago I installed walkway/garden lights for my mom and dad. They love them. Recently it appeared that half of the lights were no longer working. Last night I stopped by and my Dad gave me a handful of bulbs. I fixed 4 out of 5 dark lights simply by changing the burned out bulbs. One light needed to be replaced completely. Years ago I bought some lights hoping to put some in my yard. Long story short, it never happened. They’ve been in my attic for at least 10 years. I have given the lights to my parents. (I will be installing them if it ever stops raining) The new lights are metal, and 18 – 20 watts as compared to the plastic 4watt lights they have now. I also will be installing rock lights.

Big Moon, Mon!

March 20, 2011

The moon was supposed to be 22% bigger last night. It looked pretty big as it came up, but I was on the bike on the toll road and couldn’t safely pull off. By the time I got to my destination the Moon had gone from a giant yellow orb to, well… the Moon. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Moon. It’s the coolest thing in the night sky. It’s just that it looked like it always looks. If it was bigger, I couldn’t tell. Still, it was cool to look at.

iPad iEnvy

March 4, 2011

I want one. Truly. And, I know I would use it every day, and night, and morning and after lunch too. I’ve got friends who have them, and love them. My Uncle has one. The iPad 2 has  front and rear facing HD cameras, a dual core chip, so it’s twice as fast as the original. It’s also thinner and lighter. (drool) I want one.

I was watching Conan last night and he had a funny parody of Apple’s new product announcement video. You can see it here. You can see the original Apple video here.

Brookside Gardens

March 3, 2011

Even though the Sun was out, it still seemed like a grey day. I don’t mean depressing, just grey. Everywhere I looked it was grey. I needed some color. About a mile from my house is a park called Brookside Gardens. In the summer they have acres of plants and flowers. All year their greenhouse is open to the public. Today I walked there and took my camera.

Funk Ark

February 26, 2011

Funk Ark is a local “World Funk” band whom I’ve had the pleasure to see a few times around town. Last night they played a show at the Strathmore Mansion, in North Bethesda. (or south Rockville depending on where you’re from) This show, like their other show’s I’ve been to, was awesome. They’re a great group of musicians having fun and sounding great doing it. If you get a chance to go see them, jump on it!

I’m not a reviewer. So don’t read this as a review. It’s more like a description and suggestion.
