Remember this? I found it at the grocery store. I didn’t know they still made it.

Jiffy Pop

It got me thinking. When I was a kid we used to go camping just about every other weekend. MD, PA, WV, VA, mainly. Anyway, we used to stop on the way to a campground in PA at a little general store. There, we used to get these little fruit pies. I remember them being the tastiest little things I’ve ever had in my entire life. I know from experience that sometimes the reality doesn’t match up to the memory, but I sure wish I could find those pies. My parents tell me they think the company went out of business. Maybe I should investigate myself. Meanwhile,  I’ve got popcorn.

I Did Have Sunscreen On

April 10, 2012

Last Saturday I rode to Great Falls Park,VA. I had previously only been to the MD side of the falls. It was beautiful and peaceful. I only wish I could have  captured the true size and power of this beautiful river and falls.

Last Sunday I met with some friends from High School, and we rode for miles. On the side of one of the country roads on which we were traveling I saw this:

Transformers

I wasn’t leading so I didn’t stop, but I did take about 4 picks as we rode by doing about 50. When I got home I blew one up and saw this web address. Turns out what I saw was part of last years Transformers themed corn maze. According to the site they have the largest corn maze in Maryland. “This past years maze was 9.1 miles of trails covering 42 acres.”

I plan to go back and stop to take some better pictures.

Another Sunset Gone

March 8, 2012

I finished up work yesterday at about 1pm and I was going to go out and find something interesting to photograph. Finding the right words when writing is easier if I can also tap into the “1000 words” a photo brings to the mix. And of course, I love photography. I sat down for a second in my “comfy” chair and the next thing I new it was dark. I bolted awake, realized it wasn’t morning, and thought “damn, another sunset gone”.

So…I thought I’d try some night photography. Not my best work, but kind of interesting. This place always reminds me of the Disney Castle at Disney World. I bet it’s also full of interesting characters.

I had lunch with some friends at a really tasty Mexican restaurant, Rosa Mexicano. Great food, service, and experience. My friends were raving about the fresh guacamole and asked if I wanted some. I said no because…well… I’ve always said no. Guacamole has never “looked” right to me. I know some of you are thinking “Are you kidding/crazy/weird/serious/king of the carnivores?” I am serious, and I am a carnivore, but here’s the thing, 9 times out of 10 I’m right. If it doesn’t look right to me, it usually doesn’t taste right to me. Deviled eggs? Look nasty to me. Taste nasty to me. Egg salad? Uggg…(I love eggs any way except these two)

I’m not a kid, so when I say I don’t care for something, the implication is I’ve tried it and didn’t find it to my liking. But the reality this time was I had never tried guacamole before. I was thinking about this as the guacamole maker rolled a cart out to our table and began an elegant process of making fresh guacamole. I watched cilantro, chives/onions, jalapenos, oil, and salt go into a pestle. Followed by an avocado and then another round of cilantro, chives/onions, jalapenos, and salt. Last into the mix were the chopped tomatoes.

Truthfully? It just looked like a mess. But I love cilantro, and onions, and tomatoes, and jalapeno don’t bother me. So, the only unknown was the avocado. Sigh. I quickly picked up a chip, scooped up some of the truly disgusting green goop, popped it in my mouth and…

Wow! That’s not bad…I scooped again. I had to make sure it wasn’t a fluke…Yum!  My friends suggested we order another…I’m in!

Going Home

August 5, 2011

The worst part about going away is going home. Don’t get me wrong, I love being home. It’s just the thought of leaving the Bay, beach, mountains, or wherever my weekend takes me is depressing. I never want the good times to end. Can you relate?

Fondue Boo

March 7, 2011

I was a guest, so I felt I needed to keep my opinion to myself. That is, until my host posted, on Facebook, his thoughts about our recent visit to the Melting Pot. Usually we patronize the Gaithersburg Melting pot. This time we went to the Columbia restaurant and the service was terrible. At a place like the Melting Pot, service is more than half the experience. I mean it’s fondue people. You cook your own food. Our waiter messed up on some very basic stuff. He spent a lot of time telling us how special he thought he was, then he barely came by the table. He did bring us our courses, but he was absent the rest of the time. I want someone to at least check on my drink. I was constantly looking for the waiter because my drink was empty. He dropped off desert and didn’t come back until it was time to pick up the check that his manager had given us. The couple of times he did bring the pots or the food to the table, he spent a long time telling us about himself. I don’t mean to be mean, but I don’t care. I don’t go to a restaurant to meet new people. Make sure you are present so if the birthday boy needs another Root beer, or someone needs another fork, or if any number of things that can happen at a table of seven happen, you can attend to it. It’s waiting 101. He was terrible. The table behind us was seated as we started desert. Their waiter visited them more during our desert than ours did during our entire meal. Very disappointing experience from a usually above par establishment.

The food was excellent, but what the hell, I cooked it.

Brookside Gardens

March 3, 2011

Even though the Sun was out, it still seemed like a grey day. I don’t mean depressing, just grey. Everywhere I looked it was grey. I needed some color. About a mile from my house is a park called Brookside Gardens. In the summer they have acres of plants and flowers. All year their greenhouse is open to the public. Today I walked there and took my camera.

I C D “ICC”

February 27, 2011

I decided to ride the newly opened section of the Inter County Connector (ICC) today while it’s still free. Kind of anti climactic. It’s a road, even if it’s the nicest road in Montgomery Co, it’s still just a road. I rode from Georgia AV near Olney, to Shady Grove RD. It took about 7 min at 60mph.  During my 7 min ride I saw 3 people pulled over, 2 on the way out, and 1 on the way home.

On the way home i decided to take it past Georgia AV to where it ends at RT 28 Norbeck RD. After I got off on Norbeck RD to take some pictures, I got back on the ICC to take it back to my Georgia Av exit. Guess what? Once I got back on at 28, I couldn’t get off at Georgia AV. I had to take it all the way back to Shady Grove RD, get off, turn around and get back on. Fail. I’m sure it’s temporarily closed…right?

Funk Ark

February 26, 2011

Funk Ark is a local “World Funk” band whom I’ve had the pleasure to see a few times around town. Last night they played a show at the Strathmore Mansion, in North Bethesda. (or south Rockville depending on where you’re from) This show, like their other show’s I’ve been to, was awesome. They’re a great group of musicians having fun and sounding great doing it. If you get a chance to go see them, jump on it!

I’m not a reviewer. So don’t read this as a review. It’s more like a description and suggestion.
