Steve’s Spaghetti

March 14, 2012

My friend Steve used to make the best spaghetti. But he moved to South Carolina, so I’ve had to fend for myself. I’m not a cook nor a teacher, but here are pictures of my take on Steve’s recipe.

Amounts vary (make them up, that’s what I do.)

half a Vidalia onion
a bell pepper (I use yellow or orange)
fresh mushrooms sliced
ground beef (I use 2 lbs)
Jar of store bought sauce (I use Ragu)
Tomato paste
Red wine
salt, pepper

Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils, and Thin Mints (my favorite). If you don’t know, these are a few of the most popular Girl Scout Cookies. Yep, it’s that time of year again. I was lucky. Right across the street lived 3 little girls scouts. Every year they’ed knock on my door and I’d put in an order. Or their mom would call say they had cookies, “What would you like?” Unfortunately, they moved away several years ago so I’ve had to find my cookies elsewhere. It hasn’t always been easy, which is probably a good thing. I went to the grocery store yesterday and the Girl Scouts were selling their cookies out in front. I bought 3 boxes of my favorites. Thin Mints may not make me thin, but it is for a good cause. Right?

Thin Mints

I ask because I am making a meal, just…not from scratch. I’m grilling chicken breasts (marinated in Soy Vay’s “Island teriyaki”) and serving them with microwaved garlic mashed potatoes and Delmonte canned creamed corn. You see, I love to eat but I really don’t like to cook. I try not to eat-out or take-out every night. Listen, I know that most food tastes better fresh. I just don’t have the patience for that. I love to eat…other peoples cooking.

Whether you think I’m cooking or not, I’m eatin’ what I’m heatin’!

Yes, it was very tasty, and I’ve two more chicken breasts and plenty taters and corn for leftovers!

Meatloaf? I don’t think so.

What can I say? It looked good on the box. Sadly, and most would say not unexpectedly, it was not good. I couldn’t even finish it.

I had lunch with some friends at a really tasty Mexican restaurant, Rosa Mexicano. Great food, service, and experience. My friends were raving about the fresh guacamole and asked if I wanted some. I said no because…well… I’ve always said no. Guacamole has never “looked” right to me. I know some of you are thinking “Are you kidding/crazy/weird/serious/king of the carnivores?” I am serious, and I am a carnivore, but here’s the thing, 9 times out of 10 I’m right. If it doesn’t look right to me, it usually doesn’t taste right to me. Deviled eggs? Look nasty to me. Taste nasty to me. Egg salad? Uggg…(I love eggs any way except these two)

I’m not a kid, so when I say I don’t care for something, the implication is I’ve tried it and didn’t find it to my liking. But the reality this time was I had never tried guacamole before. I was thinking about this as the guacamole maker rolled a cart out to our table and began an elegant process of making fresh guacamole. I watched cilantro, chives/onions, jalapenos, oil, and salt go into a pestle. Followed by an avocado and then another round of cilantro, chives/onions, jalapenos, and salt. Last into the mix were the chopped tomatoes.

Truthfully? It just looked like a mess. But I love cilantro, and onions, and tomatoes, and jalapeno don’t bother me. So, the only unknown was the avocado. Sigh. I quickly picked up a chip, scooped up some of the truly disgusting green goop, popped it in my mouth and…

Wow! That’s not bad…I scooped again. I had to make sure it wasn’t a fluke…Yum!  My friends suggested we order another…I’m in!

Fish and Chips Please

January 21, 2011

I love fish and chips. Arthur Treachers, and Long John Silvers. Unfortunately, neither of these fine establishments has a location close to me. None convenient, anyway. So, I don’t get to eat there very often. But when I’m traveling, or if work takes me past one, I always try to stop in. Most of my friends think I’m crazy, but I love that beer battered (or whatever battered), deep fried, crispy deliciousness! And Hush puppies! OMG, I love those perfectly seasoned bread balls!

Today I stopped at one in Alexandria VA., and I loved it!

Had a Slice

Yes I did, and I loved it!

I don’t eat fast food much any more. But when I did, i sure did love a flame broiled cheese burger from burger King. With bacon! Mmmmmm. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. I used to get their onion rings too! I loved them… so tasty. Which makes me wonder how a company who makes such tasty food can make such horribly shitty commercials. The Creepy King has got to go. Seriously? Does anyone, anywhere, find it funny, or even entertaining? And what idiot, thought up the father &  son, Whopper, Whopper Jr campaign? Talk about stupid. And last year I think they had a grow man dressed as a baby…I’m not even sure what they were selling in that commercial. It boggles my mind to think that any of their commercials get approved by the company powers that be…you’d think someone, anyone would stand up and say “uhm..guys….that really sucked. Cause guys, your commercials really suck.
